#Oscars #WomensHistoryMonthIt’s been almost 40 years since Women’s History Month was established!
This year, we’re celebrating four female fashion powerhouses who’ve shaped the last four decades.
Let’s start with the most recent and work our way back...
Rihanna’s rise to mogul status took off in 2017 with the launch of Fenty Beauty, promoting inclusivity with products for a wide range of skin tones. Soon after, she introduced Savage X Fenty, a body-positive lingerie brand.
Rihanna then teamed up with LVMH to create Fenty, a luxury ready-to-wear brand led by a Black woman. Although Fenty was discontinued, Rihanna remains an unstoppable force in fashion and beauty!
Stella McCartney redefined fashion in the 2000s by launching her fur- and leather-free collection in 2001. Her iconic Falabella bag proved that sustainability and high fashion could coexist. Long before the sustainability movement gained momentum, McCartney advocated for fashion that considers its impact on the planet and people.
Vivienne Westwood, the Queen of Punk Style, reinvented her brand in the 1990s, merging modern fashion with vintage-inspired corsets. She introduced the world to the “punk” aesthetic and evolved her designs with expert tailoring while keeping a rebellious spirit. For nearly 50 years, Westwood’s bold, chic designs empowered women while maintaining her playful charm.
In the early 1980s, Donna Karan popularized stretch bodysuits, jersey dresses, and opaque tights, loved for their comfort. In 1985, she introduced the “Seven Easy Pieces” concept—a versatile capsule wardrobe featuring a bodysuit, wrap skirt, tailored jacket, dress, white shirt, cashmere sweater, and leather jacket. These timeless essentials are still staples today. By 1989, she launched DKNY, expanding into sportswear, jeans, underwear, and children’s clothing. Without a doubt, the ’80s were Donna Karan’s decade!

#OurCityOurCampusTo mark the start of Black History Month, we are honoring and celebrating some of our favorite influential Black visionaries who have significantly impacted the fashion industry. Their innovative ideas and artistic contributions elevated voices, pushed boundaries, and continue to inspire.
Andre Leon Tally was the first African American to hold the title of Vogue’s Creative Director and was later appointed to be the publication’s Editor-at Large. He changed the way people thought and read about fashion through his in-depth storytelling.
Ann Lowe is seen by many as the first African American to become a renowned fashion designer. Her best known design was one of the most famous wedding dresses in history: the ivory silk taffeta bridal gown worn by Jacqueline Bouvier when she married John F. Kennedy in 1953, making Lowe an essential part of fashion history.
Virgil Abloh, a Chicago-born designer, entrepreneur, and stylist became the first African American Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton in 2018. He was also the CEO of the Milan-based label Off-White, a fashion house he founded in 2013. He is remembered by many as one of fashion’s greatest creative minds.
Carly Cushnie has made a lasting impact on fashion with her minimalist designs worn by icons like Michelle Obama and Beyoncé. Since closing her namesake brand in 2020, she’sshifted her focus to home design, launching a furniture collection with Lulu and Georgia. Cushnie continues to evolve, blending her distinctive style across new creative realms.
Jay Jaxon worked as a designer in iconic Parisian fashion houses like Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent and was the first American to lead a haute couture house, Jean-Louis Scherrer. After returning to the US, he worked with many celebrities as a personal designer and consultant. He designed Annie Lennox’s suit for the 1984 Grammy Awards and was the costume designer on the popular film, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”

Every moment has been priceless, from completing graphic orders for FOX News and FOX Business to seeing the intricate workings behind the scenes prior to live broadcasts. I also had the chance to shadow a wide range of departments, such as ad sales, wardrobe, and hair and makeup.
One particularly memorable experience I would like to share is getting to sit with the cameramen while they were filming Outnumbered. I never imagined that, as a marketing major, I would be interested in production, news, or the media industry, but now I’ve discovered that the news industry is a new passion of mine. I’m so grateful to all of my mentors at FOX for helping me gain a wealth of knowledge and experience. I can’t wait to use skills from this opportunity in my future endeavors.”

He designed Annie Lennox’s suit for the 1984 Grammy Awards and was the costume designer on the popular film, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.”

“When I chose LIM it was a well-researched decision. At the time, I was running an event production company in Sri Lanka and felt like I had reached a point where I wanted something bigger. I wanted to grow both personally and professionally. I was drawn to the idea of working in the fashion industry and living in New York City.
As I was researching fashion schools, I knew I needed to choose one with a strong reputation.
